    Can Dark Matter Annihilation Dominate the Extragalactic Gamma-Ray Background?

    Annihilating dark matter (DM) has been discussed as a possible source of gamma-rays from the galactic center (GC) and contributing to the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB). Assuming universality of the density profile of DM halos, we show that it is quite unlikely that DM annihilation is a main constituent of EGB, without exceeding the observed gamma-ray flux from the GC. This argument becomes stronger when we include enhancement of the density profiles by supermassive black holes or baryon cooling. The presence of substructure may loosen the constraint, but only if a very large cross section as well as the rather flat profile are realized.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted by PR

    Parity-violating asymmetry in γdnp\gamma d \to \vec{n}p with a pionless effective theory

    Nuclear parity violation is studied with polarized neutrons in the photodisintegration of the deuteron at low energies. A pionless effective field theory with di-baryon fields is used for the investigation. Hadronic weak interactions are treated by parity-violating di-baryon-nucleon-nucleon vertices, which have undetermined coupling contants. A parity-violating asymmetry in the process is calculated for the incident photon energy up to 30 MeV. If experimental data for the parity-violating asymmetry become available in the future, we will be able to determine the unknown coupling contants in the parity-violating vertices.Comment: 4 pages.     Metal-to-Insulator Crossover in the Low-Temperature Normal State of Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_{x}CuO_{6+\delta}

    We measure the normal-state in-plane resistivity of La-doped Bi-2201 single crystals at low temperatures by suppressing superconductivity with 60-T pulsed magnetic fields. With decreasing hole doping, we observe a crossover from a metallic to insulating behavior in the low-temperature normal state. This crossover is estimated to occur near 1/8 doping, well inside the underdoped regime, and not at optimum doping as reported for other cuprates. The insulating regime is marked by a logarithmic temperature dependence of the resistivity over two decades of temperature, suggesting that a peculiar charge localization is common to the cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PR

    Conductance of Disordered Wires with Symplectic Symmetry: Comparison between Odd- and Even-Channel Cases

    The conductance of disordered wires with symplectic symmetry is studied by numerical simulations on the basis of a tight-binding model on a square lattice consisting of M lattice sites in the transverse direction. If the potential range of scatterers is much larger than the lattice constant, the number N of conducting channels becomes odd (even) when M is odd (even). The average dimensionless conductance g is calculated as a function of system length L. It is shown that when N is odd, the conductance behaves as g --> 1 with increasing L. This indicates the absence of Anderson localization. In the even-channel case, the ordinary localization behavior arises and g decays exponentially with increasing L. It is also shown that the decay of g is much faster in the odd-channel case than in the even-channel case. These numerical results are in qualitative agreement with existing analytic theories.Comment: 4 page

    Origin of the anomalous magnetic circular dichroism spectral shape in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As: Impurity bands inside the band gap

    The electronic structure of a prototype dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS), Ga1-xMnxAs, is studied by magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy. We prove that the optical transitions originated from impurity bands cause the strong positive MCD background. The MCD signal due to the E0 transition from the valence band to the conduction band is negative indicating that the p-d exchange interactions between the p-carriers and d-spin is antiferromagnetic. The negative E0 MCD signal also indicates that the hole-doping of the valence band is not so large as previously assumed. The impurity bands seem to play important roles for the ferromagnetism of Ga1-xMnxAs.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    The Discovery of Two Lymanα\alpha Emitters Beyond Redshift 6 in the Subaru Deep Field

    We have performed a deep optical imaging survey using a narrowband filter (NB921NB921) centered at λ=\lambda = 9196 \AA ~ together with ii^\prime and zz^\prime broadband filters covering an 814 arcmin2^2 area of the Subaru Deep Field. We obtained a sample of 73 strong NB921NB921-excess objects based on the following two color criteria; zNB921>1z^\prime - NB921 > 1 and iz>1.3i^\prime - z^\prime > 1.3. We then obtained optical spectroscopy of nine objects in our NB921NB921-excess sample, and identified at least two Lyα\alpha emitters atz=6.541±0.002z=6.541 \pm 0.002 and z=6.578±0.002z=6.578 \pm 0.002, each of which shows the characteristic sharp cutoff together with the continuum depression at wavelengths shortward of the line peak. The latter object is more distant than HCM-6A at z=6.56z=6.56 and thus this is the most distant known object found so far. These new data allow us to estimate the first meaningful lower limit of the star formation rate density beyond redshift 6; ρSFR5.2×104M\rho_{\rm SFR} \sim 5.2 \times 10^{-4} M_\odot yr1^{-1} Mpc3^{-3}. Since it is expected that the actual density is higher by a factor of several than this value, our new observation reveals that a moderately high level of star formation activity already occurred at zz \sim 6.6.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures.     Thermodynamic and transport properties of underdoped cuprates from ARPES data

    he relationship between photoemission spectra of high-TcT_{\textrm{c}} cuprates and their thermodynamic and transport properties are discussed. The doping dependence of the expected quasi-particle density at the Fermi level (EFE_\mathrm{F}) are compared with the electronic specific heat coefficient γ\gamma and that of the spectral weight at EFE_\mathrm{F} with the in-plane and out-of-plane superfluid density. We have estimated the electrical resistivity of underdoped cuprates from the momentum distribution curve (MDC) at EFE_\mathrm{F} in the nodal direction.
